President Trump and First Lady Melania took the high road on not being invited to the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Instead of sending the traditional gift of a glass bowl, Trump and Melania will be making a contribution to one of the 7 charities the royal couple has chosen.
“President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will be making a contribution to one of the 7 charities the royal couple has designatedin lieu of gifts,” White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters shared with ABC reporter Meridith McGraw.
Traditionally, U.S. presidents have given members of the U.K.’s royal family bowls as wedding presents, sparking rumors that the Trumps might send another gift in addition to their charitable donation.
In fact, former President Ronald Reagan and former first lady Nancy Reagan gave Princess Diana and Prince Charles a glass bowl for their wedding in 1981. Meanwhile, former President Harry Truman gifted Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip a bowl on their 1947 wedding day.
Although rumors had been swirling that former President Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama may get the royal inviteto Prince Harry’s nuptials due to their recent bonding, the prince and his bride decided against inviting political leaders.
“It has been decided that an official list of political leaders — both U.K. and international — is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding,” Kensington Palace said in a statement. “Her Majesty’s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household.”
“They are not commenting on individual guests being invited or not, but President and Mrs. Obama will not be attending the wedding,” a palace source added. “But the couples look forward to seeing each other soon.”
